Title The Mediation of Feminist Consciousness and Patriarchal Society in Northanger Abbey
Abstract
During Jane Austen’s lifetime, there are six works about feminism which have been exerting a far-reaching impact later. Most of the heroines Jane created are beautiful and intellectual. The typical fair ladies in Jane’s work are all in line with the traditional moral, While Northanger Abbey is the exception. In this novel, the heroine, Catherine Morland, is a common girl with personal worldviews and values which are greatly different from other girls. This paper will carry on deep discussion on how Catherine’s feminist thought survives in such a patriarchal society. Through the comparison between Catherine and other female roles,in the aspect of their views on men and themselves, we can know what’s the sound the author wants to make through this novel. Moreover, the paper will further analyze the male and female social status in the 19th century, as well as how Austen promotes the development of feminism in this novel. At last, the paper will also take the modern society into consideration and explore the practical meaning of Northanger Abbey.

1 Introduction
1.1 The Brief Introduction of the Author’s Work
Jane Austen is a famous British novelist in the 19th century and one of the most significant female writer in the history of world literature. Her works appeared in the early 19th century, famous for meticulous observation and lively words. At that time, a fake romantic trend represented by “Gothic fiction” and “sentimental novel” is all the vogue. However, Austen’ s works are centered on inundant female emotion and those “vulnerable” sorrowful heroines. Just as Virginia Woolf has once said: “These satires are on target because all the young Austens are laughing at those elegant ladies who are ‘sighing deeply’ and ‘falling in sofa’”(Fu jun, 2002). She inherits and further develops outstanding 18th century’s realism writing tradition, preparing for the climax in 19th century’s. Thus she plays an important role in the history of realism literature.
