A Comparative Study of Metaphor Translation in Xu Yuanchong’s and Sun Dayu’s Versions of Li Po’s Poems
1. Introduction
1.1 Significance of this Thesis
Since the words produced, Chinese nation has its poetic language. Word not only could create amazing sounds through the form of poem, but also could create poetic image and poetic world via words with rich meanings. Chinese literature plays an important role in the international literature status, and Chinese poetry is an indispensable part.
The reason that Chinese literature has a great impact on world culture, especially on English culture, is the great works that these outstanding Chinese to English translators have done. It is valuable for us to study how to translate Chinese classic poetry into English, and it is worthy to learn how to spread Chinese culture around the world.
In Chinese classic poetry, figure is used to emphasis a poet’s emotion. Metaphor is one of the most important figures in literature, especially in poetry. A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing for rhetorical effect, thus highlighting the similarities between the two. It is therefore considered more rhetorically powerful than a simile. From the metaphor translations that we can obviously draw the differences between two versions.
Li Po(701-762) is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang dynasty and of China of all times. His poetry was famous for splendid images and took traditional poetic forms to new heights. We will take several metaphor in his example to analysis the differences between two famous translator--Xu Yuanchong and Sun Dayu. The author would analysis these verses to answer the following questions.

The Present study is basically conducted under the guidance of Xu Yuanchong’s three aspects of beauty and Sun Dayu’s metrical theory, and the thesis aims to answer the following questions:
1.What are the features of Xu Yuanchong’s and Sun Dayu’s versions of Li Po’s metaphor verse?
