Acknowledgments This dissertation has finally come to an end. My sincere thanks go first to Prof. Yan Ming, a responsible and knowledge supervisor. From the beginning, She pided the whole writing process into several phases each with a goal and then reminded me of meeting each deadline in each phase. Every time I sent her an e-mail or messages for revisions or for answers, she would always reply me when she was available. In the revision phase, she not only simply made amendments to the dissertation, but also told me what every part intended to show, which shows her rich experience in paper supervision and knowledge in English field. Next I would like to show my appreciation to General Manager Wang Zonghua and my classmates. They were of great help to give me inspiration and to fill in my questionnaire in ”5 A School-based Supplementary Investigation”. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for bringing me up and showing respect to every decision I made. 36105
Abstract Interpretation is far more difficult to be recorded than translation for the feature of oral speaking and its complex process. It is not until the Paris Peace Conference that some basic interpreting techniques caught the universal attention and they still have a great effect in modern interpretation field. Striving to present the preliminary understanding of language interpretation acquisition from the perspective of schema theory, this dissertation attempts to illustrate a systematical review on interpreting and schema theory, then, with the help of a tentative school-based questionnaire, the practicability of the application of schema theory in interpreting is investigated. Finally, a reflection on the application of schema theory in the process of Chinese-English interpretation by SIT undergraduates is held from the perspective of a learner as well as a researcher in initial stage. The key parts of the dissertation are the detailed review and combing of the schema and interpretation theories, and the exploration of the descriptive survey serves as the supplemental information. With the combined way of methodology as a qualitative research on the whole, the paper draws a conclusion that:the majority of English major students involving in interpreting course in SIT are inclined to use schema in interpreting. Although they have recognized the importance of schema theory, the performance in linguistic schema is poor and further practice in extra-linguistic schema is needed.
Key words: schema theory, interpreting process, interpretation acquisition
