Abstract Lord of the Flies describes a group of boys who strands on an island, which is located in Pacific Ocean. William Golding employs a lot of symbols in order to reveal features of characters. Therefore, this paper will study the features and symbolic meanings. Ralph is the symbol of civilization and democracy. Piggy stands for reason. He often deals with problems by applying rational and scientific attitudes. Simon possesses the ability super natural, he is a man who know truth of beast. Jack is a negative protagonist, who collects all the nature evils of human beings, such as savagery and dictatorship. Besides, this paper can show how the theme is manifested, which is the conflict between civilization and savagery, and the evil nature of human binges, it is convenient to better understand themes of this novel.

I. Introduction
Lord of the flies is written by William Golding. He is an English novelist, playwright and poet. He was born in Cornwall in 1991. He was educated at Marlborough Grammar School. Then he entranced at Brace-nose College Oxford in 1995. And he was brought up to be a scientist. But two years latter, he read English literature instead and become devoted to Anglo-Saxon. He published a volume of poems in 1934. Next year, he graduated from college of Oxford. Apart from writing, he has been occupied in various jobs such as being a schoolmaster, a lecturer and a sailor. He joined the Royal Wavy in 1940 and he took part in the war. He returned to teaching and starts to write after the end of war. His first novel is Lord of the Flies and it’s edited as film. William Golding won a Nobel Prize for it. He was also awarded the Book Prize for literature in 1980. Besides, he was knighted by Elizabeth II in 1988 and he was a fellow of the Royal Society of literature. He lived in Willtewire after retired. He regards writing as his career. In his pastime, he was keen on enjoying music, sailing and reading classical Greek. He died in 1993. There be introducing about the plot and background of Lord of the Flies.
This novel told a story that it takes places in the midst of unexpected nuclear war in the future. There are a group of boys who are all from British. They required for evacuating. Misfortune, The airplane crashes on and it fell down near an isolated island which is located in the Pacific Ocean the pilot lost his life. But the children were survived. They elected Ralph as their chief and taken Jack a man who was responsible for hunting and taking care of fire. However, the children separated into two leagues which had opposite views towards how to survive on the island, since the conflicts were increasing between in Ralph and Jack. As a result, Piggy and Simon were killed. Ralph was survived by a navel officer. This paper will further analysis the view of William Golding. It means that the nature of human is evil. The author applied various symbols to reinforce it by describing behavior and language of the characters in order to express their inner world. Therefore, the paper wills analysis various symbols of this novel. This paper can be pided into four chapters. Chapter one is introducing the author, including his experiences and his masterpieces. Moreover, it contains introduction the plot of Lord of the Flies and the purpose of this paper, and the overall structure of this paper. Chapter two is analyzing the foremost features of characters. There are main four protagonists, they are respectively Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack. They have their own inpiduals. This chapter also presents some concrete cases in order to further analysis the features of them. Chapter three is discussing the definition of symbol and it’s effect. Moreover, this chapter will further analyzing symbolic meaning of the main characters in detail.
