1.3 Research SignificanceAmy Tan is carrying a dual identity to begin writing, the male charactersdescribed in her novels are different from both the American writers and the localChinese ones. Moreover, in recent researches, scholars from home and broad give prior to the mother-daughter relationship, cultural identity, conflict and integration ofEast and West. Therefore, the study in male images can replenish the research in AmyTan’s work. The Chinese male images in The Kitchen God’ s Wife are “the other” inAmerica society. Since the image of “the other” can reflect the author’s thoughts,the study in male images can help us to understand the intention of Amy Tan and herunderstandings of Chinese American females, so as to know more about the ChineseAmerican literature.1.4 Overall StructureThe thesis is generally pided into three parts, introduction, main body andconclusion. Introduction includes research significance, research background,literature review, research methodology as well as the organization of the thesis. Themain body includes three chapters. Chapter one deals with the method of narration,tending to analyze the structure of the novel. Chapter two introduces the two mainmale images, Wen Fu and Jimmy Louie, using the textual examples to give the mostdetailed look at the characters. After analysis of the characters, Chapter three delvesinto the Amy Tan’s creation intention through the comparison between the twocharacters to reflect the author herself from “the other” image.
