ABSTRACT Idioms, as the crystallization of people’s labor, contain abundant cultural connotation. The idioms that this thesis discusses are generalized, including proverbs, two-part allegorical sayings, literary quotations and so on. Some of the idioms are implicit and humorous, and others are serious and graceful. All of the idioms are not only concise and comprehensive, but also vivid and full of wit and humor, making people a comfortable experience. Due to the disparity of geography, life style and customs, religious faith, history, etc, the Chinese and English idioms have their own cultural characteristics. The ultimate aim of translation, in reality, is to promote communication and mutual understandings among different cultures. Therefore, more significance should be attached to the culture in the process of translation. The difficulties caused by the cultural persity in the translation of Chinese and English idioms include the unequivalence in idioms, misinterpreting the meaning of idioms, conceptual problems and idiomatic usage. This thesis discusses some strategies related to the translation of Chinese and English idioms and offers six idioms’ translation methods. Domestication is a common method in the translation of Chinese and English idioms, however, domesticating strategy has the disadvantage of cultural loss because it always replaces the source language images with the target cultural ones or just simply gives them up. In contrast, foreignizing strategy keeps the original cultural images of the text and thus expresses better to the TL readers the original culture. Therefore, foreignization should be adopted on the condition of not affecting expressiveness. In order not to twist the original cultural flavor, domestication should be employed. In addition, according to some concrete cases, literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission can be chosen. This thesis will firstly explores the cultural persity reflected by Chinese and English idioms, then analyzes difficulties caused by the cultural persity in the translation of Chinese and English idioms, and on the basis of which, demonstrates the specific principle and methods of the translation of Chinese and English idioms in details.46184
