ABSTRACT Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), written by Mrs. Stowe, is identified as the greatest antislavery declaration during the Abolitionist Movement (1830-1870) in the 19th century. It inspires the black community and people in the North to fight against the slavery system. 46377
This thesis mainly focuses on the living conditions of three black slaves in the novel: Tom, Eliza and George. It makes a comparative analysis about their different life, and points out the common plight of the blacks before the Abolitionist Movement, and then it further discusses the reasons for their different lives such as the influence of religion, awakened fighting consciousness and assistance of enlightened people.
Before the Abolitionist Movement, the blacks almost have no freedom or human rights, struggling on the verge of starvation and death. Tom is loyal and honest, but he is tortured to death by the slave owner; Eliza makes a desperate try to escape at the risk of her life to protect her son; George is unwilling to give in to the slave owner and fights for freedom and finally achieves freedom.
Based on the analyses, we can draw the conclusion that Mrs. Stowe wants her readers to know that the black resistance is the direct way to wipe out the slavery. Besides, the preparations of religion, social ideology and social values of the time are also essential elements. All this demonstrates the insightful and great antislavery thought of Mrs. Stowe.
