The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the title of the story. The title is often abbreviated to Liang Zhu. The story is now counted as one of China’s Four Great Folktales, the others being the Legend of the White Snake, Lady Men Jiang, and The Cowherd and the Weaving Maid. The legend of Butterfly Lovers is full of the features of Jiang Nan and reflects the unique mental characteristics of people in Jiang Nan. The plot in the legend can vividly show people’s devoted spirit to love. In addition, the legend has been changed into different forms, for example, ballad, romantic, opera, music and so on. Due to this, the legend has become popular among people.
