1.1 The background of the research

In the field of foreign language teaching, grammar teaching has been an essential topic for a long time. As Rutherford (1987) referred, grammar teaching almost equals to foreign language teaching for more than two thousand and five hundred years. Thus, the significance of grammar teaching cannot be doubted. Grammar is deemed to be an inseparable part of English teaching and learning. It is fundamental for English listening, speaking, reading and writing.
