Thomas Hardy’s primary novels are Wessex novels. He classified these novels himself into three groups. The first group is novels of character and environment, which are also called Wessex novels. These novels take the southwest country of England as the setting of the stories. When he was 60 years old, he gave up novel writing and turned to poetry. He published 8 volumes of poems, altogether 918.
