Abstract William Faulkner (1897-1962) is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century in America. He wrote large amounts of works and most of works are influenced by his homeland——American south. “A Rose for Emily” published in 1934 is one of his representative works. It is also a classical Gothic literature. This short story narrates a tragic life of Miss Emily who becomes a murderer because of paternalism.71706
Firstly this paper analyzes the characteristics of Gothic novel. And then it studies on the Gothic elements in “A Rose for Emily”. The analysis mainly focuses on settings, horrible atmosphere and wired characters. Through the analysis, this paper studies Gothic writing techniques and analyzes the impacts how Gothic literature influences on American society.
This paper includes three parts. There is a brief introduction to William Faulkner and his short story “A Rose for Emily” and literature review on the short story. The body of this paper includes horrible settings, wired characters, death of major characters and narrative. These four chapters mainly focus on the using of Gothic elements in the short story. Last part of the paper is to make a conclusion of it.

摘 要威廉•福克纳是美国现代文学史上最重要的作家之一。他一生创作十分丰富,作品大多受他家乡——美国南部的影响。他在1934年发表的短篇小说《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》是他的代表作品之一。这部小说可以说是哥特式小说的经典之作。这篇小说讲述了艾米丽小姐悲惨的一生,为读者展现了一位美国南方的贵族小姐在父权zhuyi毒害下,最终成为了杀人凶手的过程。
本文首先从分析哥特式小说特征出发,研究《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》中哥特式元素的应用,从小说中建筑风格以及环境氛围、荒诞的人物形象、不同视角描写,人物塑造和故事情节等方面浅析作者独特的哥特式写作手法和艺术风格,来解决哥特式元素小说对当时美国社会以及政治文化的影响。
这篇论文一共包括三个部分。第一部分对作者威廉•福克纳和他的短篇小说《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》作简要说明,简述了哥特小说的历史以及国内外学者对小说的研究成就。论文的主体部分,共四大章节,包括恐怖的氛围、怪诞的人物、主要人物的死亡以及叙事方式,主要分析了哥特式元素在小说中的运用。最后一部分对论文进行整体的总结概括。

An Analysis of Gothic Characteristics in “A Rose for Emily”
Introduction
William Faulkner (September 24, 1897- July 6, 1962) is the most influential writer in American history. He writes not only novels, but also short stories, poetry and occasional screenplays. Most of his works have been influenced by his native state of Mississippi. Faulkner set most of his short works in Yoknapatawpha County which is his hometown of Oxford. He is good at writing literature about southern American. In the field of southern American literature, he is considered as one of the most talented writers along with Flannery O’Connor, Thomas Wolfe and Tennessee Williams. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949 for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel, after that he is known by the world. Although his work was published in 1919, he was relatively unknown before winning the Prize.
