As for the study of Relevance Translation Theory in China, it began with the article of Lin kenan “Relevance and Translation” written in 1994 in the publication of Chinese Translators Journal。 It is a brief introduction of Gutt’s theory。 After that, increasingly specialized researches on relevance theory applied in translation sprung up like mushrooms。
From 2000 to 2015, on the China National Knowledge Internet, by entering the key words of "relevance theory" and “translation”, more than 3000 papers about translation with Relevance Theory can be discovered。 It means that relevance-theoretic translation has been widely spread and known for us in translation fields。 来*自-优=尔,论:文+网www.youerw.com
In 1997 and 2001, He Ziran organized the “National Seminar on Relevance Theory” in Guangzhou and published Pragmatics and English Learning (1997) to make a special study on the relation between Relevance Theory and translation。 Two years later, A Relevance Theoretic Account of Translation (Zhao Yanchun, 1999) was written by Zhao Yanchun。 In this article, he accounted the predominance of relevance translation and a theoretical model for translation。 Besides, he maintained two important concepts of translation theory by the framework of relevance theory: untranslatability and equivalence。 Another important article Interpretation of Translation Criteria written by Meng Jiangang in 2001 shows us a clear account of criteria in translation。(Meng Jiangang, 2001)It also illustrates relevance’s function in the intention inference of translation。 In addition, Zhang Chunbo discussed Gutt's direct translation and indirect translation and dialectically provided an analysis of translation phenomena (Zhang Chunbo, 2003)。 In general, studies on the relevance theory applied in the practice of translation are very common at home nowadays。
Many scholars both at home and abroad confirm the great explanatory power of relevance theory to translation。 However, some questions still are put forward。 Gutt once said in the preface of his book Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context that relevance theory is sufficient to explain all phenomena in translation, and there is no need to establish another one。 For this judgement, most scholars take it with a grain of salt。 For instance, Jiang xiaohua(1998) thought relevance theory accomplish a task with ease in explanatory, while it is much powerless in analyzing concrete problems。 Nida (2001:16-17) affirmed the unique point of view relevance theory brought, but he disagreed that its functions cover all complex linguistic phenomena。 Moreover, the definition of translation still needs to be modified from the perspective of relevance theory。 Just for such limitations of relevance theory, it is more meaningful and important for us to make a better translation。 The task of translators is to enable readers to obtain the optimal contextual by building a bridge between text and readers。 So at present how to seek the optimal relevance is still a big task for us to do。
