2。 Literature Review

2。1 Brief introduction to the the Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance

Yan Fu who was an excellent Chinese translator proposed that “there are three difficulties in translation: faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance” in the preface to his translation of Evolution and Ethics。 He did not treat them as universal standards for translation but said that these standards were dependent on each other。 However, since the publication of that work, the Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance has been attributed to Yan Fu as a standard for any good translation and has become a platitude in Chinese translation field, bringing about lots of debates and studies。

Yan’s three characters theory of translation, namely, faithfulness, be true to the original in spirit; expressiveness, be accessible to the target reader; and elegance, be in the language the target reader accepts as being educated。 The second is the most significant one of the three standards for translation。 If the meaning of the translation is not accessible to the reader, there is no difference between having translated the text and not having translated the text at all。 In order to facilitate comprehension, word order should be changed。 Yan Fu's theory of translation is based on his experience with translating works of social sciences from English into Chinese。 The typical misapplication of the theory is to extend it to the translation of literary works。 According to Yan, good translation is one that is true to the original in spirit, accessible to the target reader in meaning, and attractive to the target reader in style。

2。1。1 The development of the Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance

The Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance originated in ancient times and became mature in modern times。 It has an important status in the history of translation and is beyond compare。 It is inherited and developed along with times。 With the passage of time and development of era, the principle is always taking on new looks。 Fu Lei’s Spiritual and Resemblance and Qian Zhongshu’s The Theory of Sublimity made pathbreaking development of the principle, which brought the Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance into category of literary aesthetics。 Lin Yutang developed Yan’s translation theory and put forward three criteria of translation: faithfulness, smoothness and beauty。 He believed the translation should be responsible for the original text, readers and art。 文献综述

The Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance provides a systematic and comprehensively pragmatic perspective on language using, which also supplies a new perspective on the process of translation。

2。2 The relation between the Principle of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance and Huaiyang Cuisine

Yan Fu is a brilliant translator of epochal significance in our modern society who has a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese history。 He explicitly put forward the translation standard of “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance”。 The “Faithfulness” he advocated refers to that the meaning dose not violate the source article and “Expressiveness” means that translation will avoid pedantic attention to detail or rules and it just needs to convey the original intention。 “Elegance” means the translation should be beautiful。 The principle provides a systematic perspective on language using。 从“信达雅”的角度分析淮扬菜菜名翻译(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_83935.html
