Abstract
The Great Gatsby was a short novel which was written by the American author Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was regarded as one of the representative writers of the “Lost Generation” and was also the speaker of the “Jazz Age”. At the end of the 20th centuries, The Great Gatsby had been evaluated as No.2 out of the 100 classic novels by the American Academy Circle, thus becoming a contemporary and classic work.
In this paper I mainly analyzed this novel from symbolism, and basically it can be pided into five parts. The first part is the background and the main story of the novel; the second part describes the definition of symbolism and the other literature works which symbolism is applied; the third part focus on analyzing the symbolism in The Great Gatsby, including different colors, different settings, and different characters, to tell the fundamental significance of this novel; the forth part detailed analyzed the symbolic meaning in the American Dream and disillusion of American Dream; the fifth part is the conclusion of the paper. In this novel, the author uses symbolism to deepen the inner meaning of the story, to highlight the main idea, and to reveal the disillusionment of the American Dream.

摘要《了不起的盖茨比》是一部由美国作家弗•司各特•菲茨杰拉德所著的短篇小说。 菲茨杰拉德是美国20世纪20年代的“迷惘的一代”的代表作家之一，他被认为是美国“爵士时代”的发言人。20世纪末，《了不起的盖茨比》被美国学术界权威评定为一百部最优秀小说中的第二位，跻身于当代经典行列。
本文主要从象征主义方面来分析这部小说，主要分为四个部分。第一部分主要介绍小说的时代背景以及主要内容；第二部分阐述了象征主义的定义作用以及其在其他文学作品中的体现；第三部分则重点分析象征主义在《了不起的盖茨比》中的运用，通过不同颜色的象征，不同事物的象征，不同人物的象征来看小说的根本意义；第四个部分详尽地分析了美国梦的象征意义以及美国梦的破灭，；第五个部分为结论。作者在文章中用了象征主义来深化作品中心，突出文章主旨，揭示了美国梦的破灭。
