1。1 Research Background
Public speaking is a very popular art that everyone can participate。 The language in speech presents the characteristics of speakers and a language form between spoken language and written language。 Meanwhile, the Internet has become a very important tool for people to search information。 Public speaking began to record as short videos and upload on the Internet。 So many famous speeches can be seen and learned on the Internet, and some on-line speeches programs become very popular。 One of the most famous programs is TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design)。 TED speeches invites different kinds of people to give speech to the public, and the video of the speeches will put on Ted’s official websites。 The speeches in TED are 5mins to 20mins long and audience can easily understand by the subtitle given by TED。 So it also becomes a very popular educational resource because of its topic and speakers’ speech skills。 To do a stylistic analysis can help people understand better and deeper。 论文网
1。2 Research Purpose
I have witnessed lots of teachers in schools using TED as a teaching resource or English learners using TED as a course or tools to improve their public speaking skills。 But most studies of TED speeches are studying about the media communication, the educational meaning and the language features。 But only few researches talked about how to help English educators and learners with the contents of TED speeches。 TED speeches were also a kind of public speeches。 The case I study with is the most popular TED speech video, Do Schools kill creativity? from Sir Ken Robinson。 This study is going to focus of the stylistic features of the most famous TED speech in order to find out how the speaker organized his content and whether there is a connection between the frequency of word using and the effect of the speech。 And the study is going to solve these two questions: a。 How the speakers use the rhetorics to polish the content; b。 What words/phrases he prefer to use; c。 How he organize the sentences。
1。3 Research Significance
Since TED is now considered as a very famous and popular online platform, people from any country can see it on Internet and take it as a communication media or a study tool。 But they cannot improve by this way if they can’t learn the point efficiently from the speech。 Having a stylistic study of the most popular and most viewed video can help to dig out a speech pattern on the Internet。 Also its speeches must have something in common to attract people around the world。 To do the stylistic analysis can help to find out some regulations of giving such time-limited speeches, such as what kind of rhetoric the speaker likes to use the most and help to improve student’ public speaking skills in a more academic way。
