II。 Literature Review
2。1 Notion of public speech
In Introduction to English Stylistics(Cheng, 2004) speech is referred as a kind of social activity which aims to use kinds of artistic means to explain one’s idea or express one’s personal feelings in order to convince the audience。 From its definition, we know that the language in public speech is different from oral language or the literary language。 It is more official than spoken language (including daily conversation, or commercial advertising), since it has to show his reliability and seriousness。 Also, some believe that “Public speeches share similarities with both written language and spoken language。 On most occasions, they are written in advance and delivered in spoken form, so in many ways, they are more formal than daily conversation。。。Compared with written language, public speeches have to adapt to the audience’s feedback and rely on skillful oral delivery。” (Li, 2011)
2。2 The previous studies of stylistic analysis of public speech
In speeches, speakers will often give some data and research to convince the audience, and have a very clear logic to state their views step by step。 But the speech language is also less official than the legal provision or literary review since it needs to closer the relationship between the speaker and audience。 If the speaker uses too professional or formal language that are hard for listeners to understand, the public will lose their interests in listening。 So it is very important for the public speakers to select a proper way to deliver their opinions。来*自-优=尔,论:文+网www.youerw.com
The stylistic features of speech differ from articles or oral English styles。 For example, a speech needs to be accurate, concise, plain, vivid, and needs to avoid monotony。 Also it can analyze from the sentence structure, the verb phrases and noun phrases, the type of the sentences and vocabulary, phonetics and rhetoric。 Here the former researches usually calculate the frequency of using the words。 Thus the academics could find that those famous speeches usually contain more complicated words or phrases, and uses kinds of different types of sentences such as rhetorical questions, imperative sentences。 Also, some speakers are good at using stress and accent or phonemes, which shows his own personal characters to impress the audience。 For example, Obama’s speeches are very famous。 He even was regarded as a ‘liar’ by the Media because of his brilliant skills of public speaking。 His speeches are considered as successful and typical examples for the public speaking learners。 Especially his victory speech, was praised a lot for his perfect use of rhetoric, and the appropriate pause, stress and his great passion that can affect the public (Rui & Li, 2014)。 Some also conclude that public speaking is more formal than daily conversation, but not as formal as written works (Li, 2011)。
