Abstract
The Joy Luck Club is written by Amy Tan, a famous Chinese American writer. In this novel she mainly describes the complicated relationship between four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters. The thesis tries to analyze the mother-daughter relationship in detail by presenting the cultural conflicts and blending. The author holds the idea that these conflicts between them are just the reflection of the cultural conflicts. Therefore, by analyzing the mother-daughter conflicts we can clearly find the cultural conflicts hidden behind this relationship and have a discussion of the possibility and inevitability of the coexistence of different cultures.
The thesis is pided into four chapters. In Chapter one, the writer makes a brief introduction to the research background, Amy Tan and The Joy Luck Club. In Chapter two, the writer analyzes the conflicts and blending which exist in the Mother-Daughter relationships in detail. In The Joy Luck Club, different manners on expressions and different understanding on personal value and cultures make the conflicts happen. And the cultural concord is mainly represented by maternal love and daughters’ consciousness of racial and cultural identity. In Chapter three, a detailed analysis is made to explain the reasons why there exists so disharmonious relationship between mothers and daughters, and how the Chinese culture and Western culture reconnect with each other at last.
From the analysis of the thesis, the conclusion can be drawn that different cultural backgrounds cause the conflicts and multiple cultures can coexist. Only when people from different cultures understand and respect the others’ culture and make better communication can they build up harmonious relationship.
