An Eco-critical Analysis of Lady Chatterley’s Lover

D。H Lawrence is one of the most controversial writers in the twentieth century, who was of humble origin and became an outstanding writer after his continuous efforts。 He is such a brilliant and diligent writer that he had created a large number of great works for people all over the world。论文网

Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as the summery of his novels and his last work, is one of the works that he is most proud of。 Its publication had caused an uproar in world literature。 Regarded as porn literature, the book was time and again sent to trial。 However, classics can survive the passage of time。 After 1960 when novels were liberated, Lady Chatterley’s Lover was soon sold out and it was more required than Bible ---the most popular English book。

The plot of the novel is not complicated。 During the First World War, a beautiful, energetic girl, Connie, is married to a military officer, Clifford Chatterley。 After their honeymoon, Clifford return to the battle field and is returned with a crippled body not long after。 Although his life is saved, the lower part of the body of the poor old man is disabled。 Worse still, his sexual ability is denied。 Thereafter, Connie and Clifford return to his hometown Wragby。 Clifford inherits a baron and Connie become Lady Chatterley。 Life is boring and monotonous。 As time goes by, Connie’s body ages and withers as a result of mental and physical dissatisfaction。 Then, Connie meets Mellors, the forest keeper。 Their relation develops from physical attraction to the harmonious mixture of soul and flesh。 After experiencing the revival of flesh and spirit, they fall in love with each other, realizing the truth of love and the meaning

of life in the harmonious mixture of soul and flesh。 Thereupon, Connie asks Clifford for porce but is refused。 Consequently, Connie and Males decide to elope, to pursue a simple and beautiful idyllic life。

With research into Lawrence’ works, the exquisite artistry and profound idea of Lady Chatterley’s Lover as a classic has been recognized by the world academic circles。 The focus of the study about it has been beyond the question of whether it is pornographic or not。 It has been shifted to the serious social problems the book revealed and deep thinking about nature, civilization, humanity and  sexual relationships。 Ever since the arisen of Ecological Criticism, there appeared many essays which study the works of Lawrence’ on the ground of the theory of Eco-criticism。 But there is a lack of systematic study of Lady Chatterley’s Lover from the perspective of Eco-criticism。 A small number of such essay does exist, but they mostly focus on Lawrence’ natural Ecological philosophy while lack his  social ecological view。 In a word, they are not systematic。
