Ⅰ。 Introduction

Francis Scott Fitzgerald is one of the greatest American writers in the 1900s。 Most of the characters he created are some young men and women pursuing the fancy dreams after the First World War whose life experience and mental world have close connections with Fitzgerald。 His third work, The Great Gatsby, lays the foundation of American literary history。 Thus, Fitzgerald becomes the spokesman of the Jazz Age and the Lost Generation。(Prigozy, 2004: 69) 文献综述

In the 1920s, the American economy was booming。 Most of the Americans had already got the material benefits from the First World War so that they closed the gate of their nation to enjoy wealth and pleasure with the enthusiasm that they never had before。 They thought they were in the most glorious age of human history and believed this age would develop with no end。 There was a deep change in the society structure and people’s behavior and mentality。 The middle class was expanding fast; personal consumption was inflating; the life style and morality changed drastically。 Fitzgerald himself was also immersed in this age of feasting and revelry。 He sensed the age’s desperate demand for romance and the inanity behind vanity, which were all reflected in his works。 This was a period that belonged to money, party, music and alcohol。 And it was also an age full of hypocrisy, selfishness and corruption。(Malcolm, 1971: 2) 从电影《了不起的盖茨比》看盖茨比的了不起:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_92804.html
