1 Introduction

The literary image of Sherlock Holmes appeared in A Study in Scarlet by Conan Doyle。 Since then, Sherlock Holmes, a thin and tall big detective with a pipe, wearing a soft cloth cap, armed with a magnifying glass, became popular all over the world for his unique personality and excellent logical reasoning。 论文网

From the historical perspective, the literary image of detective can be said to be of countless, such as Edgar Allan Poe’s detective Doberman and the grand rogue Yassen Robin。 However, Sherlock Holmes could be the most popular and the best known。 The success of the detective stories should not have been achieved without Conan Doyle’s Characterization of Sherlock Holmes。His description about Holmes’s characterization is detailed, vivid and immersive。 Every year, Baker Street gets lots of letters from all over the world, which turns to Sherlock Holmes for help。 Sherlock Holmes has also been adapted to film and television many times, such as Sherlock Holmes in United States and Detective Sherlock in Britain。 It is a belief “held for years by thousands that he was an actual living human being - a circumstance that constitutes one of the must unsual chapters in literary history”。 (Alma Elizabeth, 1958:471) The great image of Sherlock Holmes goes from mouth to mouth。 Even in the modern society, the literary image of Sherlock is sill active, we are impressed by his charm。 

The Complete Classic Series of Sherlock Holmes opened up a “golden age” of detective fiction which have been translated into 57 languages since 100 years ago and popular in the world。 The fiction is also honored as “the Bible” by Sherlockian in detective fiction。 As A Study in Scarlet which is from Conan Doyle's first detective story published, human beings from all over the world became to accept the protagonist Sherlock Holmes for his distinct personality and excellent logical reasoning。 The Complete Classic Series of Sherlock Holmes attracted a lot of readers who appreciated Sherlock Holmes very much。

A Scottish author, Arthur Conan Doyle was best-known for his masterpiece about the detective Sherlock Holmes。 This fiction was commonly considered as a creative renovation in the field of criem fiction and for the adventures of Professor Challenger。 In Conan Doyle's work, it is not difficult to find that he is a creative and imaginative writer, his works cover a wide range, including a science fiction, a historical novel, drama and fiction, poetry, and nonfiction works。 In particular, his Sherlock Holmes collection has been translated into 57 languages。 Conan Doyle repeatedly said that Holmes was inspired by the real-life figure of Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, whom Doyle met in 1877 and had worked for as a clerk。 Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing broad conclusions from minute observations。 (see Lycett, Andrew, 2007:53-54) Sherlock Holmes's story has been adapted into theater, film, radio and television, and which is well known by human beings through modern media devices。 It was surprising that Doyle had been one of the most highly paid writers in the world since 1920。 Steven Doyle (2010:51), editor of the Baker Street Journal, wrote, “Conan was Arthur’s middle name。 Shortly after he graduated from high school he began using Conan as a sort of surname。 But technically his last name is simply ‘Doyle’。”
