After discussing the relationship among etymology, vocabulary and culture, the role of etymology in vocabulary teaching and vocabulary teaching by using etymology,

the author presents three vocabulary strategies involved in cultural connotation of etymology。

Ⅱ。 Language and Culture

2。1 The Relationship Between Language and Culture

Culture and Language are hard to define precisely。 In terms of language, there are two very different views。 Some people think that language is the sum of speech, grammar, vocabulary, and it is a sign system。 This is a narrow definition。 Other people believe that language and culture are closely related, and language is the carrier of culture(Huwenzheng,78)。 It is equally difficult to define a culture。 Different countries, various rules, all kinds of scholars have different understandings of the culture。 Generally speaking, culture can be defined from two kinds of broad sense and narrow sense。 The general culture refers to the totality of all substantial wealth and mental wealth made by human。 Narrow sense refers to the spiritual wealth, including the long-term accumulation of the various values of the concept of art, religion, superstructure, etc。 And language is one of the most important parts of it。 The relationship between culture and language is complex, interdependent and mutually dependent。 Language is affected by culture, which puts its influence on culture the other way round。 The two complement each other and promote each other。 The formation and expression of culture cannot be separated from the language。 People are learning a language, and they are learning the culture of the language。If there is a lack of cultural background knowledge of the target language, it will lead to a lot of time to waste in language understanding of the obstacles。 Therefore, foreign language learning should not be just a process of mastering the basic skills of language。 It needs also us to understand the target language culture, change the mode of thinking of the process。文献综述

2。2 Culture Behind the Word

Vocabulary is the basic element of language, which is the survival of the pillars of the language。 Eastern culture and western culture have a huge difference。 This cultural difference is reflected more apparently in the lexical level。 Even the most ordinary words and phrases in English have cultural meanings。 We could say that vocabulary is the largest carrier of culture。 Vocabulary itself includes rich cultural meaning。 Served as one of the chief content of foreign language teaching, the cultural meaning of vocabulary and its implication makes up an important part of culture teaching in foreign language teaching。 The importance of vocabulary in cultural studies is also reflected in the relationship between the two。 Vocabulary and culture are interdependent。 Away from the vocabulary, cultural studies have lost the material conditions for survival。 Vocabulary is the basis and necessary condition for the study of culture。 Since the majority of the study of culture is carried out by the vocabulary。 Free from the cultural, vocabulary will be bleak colorless, and lack of vitality。 From the perspective of ability training, the cultivation of language ability is an important step in the cultivation of communicative competence。 Vocabulary is one of the core parts of the language ability that enables the communication to be carried out。 Without vocabulary, communication will be difficult。 But only to impart knowledge of vocabulary and not to carry out the teaching of cultural knowledge, it is difficult for the students to have true intercultural communicative competence。 The development and change of culture affect the development and change of vocabulary。 The development and change of vocabulary reflect the development and change of culture。 For example, the Roman occupation of Britain had been for up to a year since AD43。 During this period the culture and customs of Rome gradually infiltrated into Britain and Social life began to appear "Rome" phenomenon。 With the change of the cultural trend, language changes also appeared especially the changes of vocabulary such as “burn one’s boats” (破釜沉舟), “bear the palm”(戴棕榈枝), “worth one’s salt”(称职) and so on。来:自[优E尔L论W文W网www.youerw.com +QQ752018766- 英语词源的文化内涵及词汇教学(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_98699.html
