Translation Strategies of Folk Language in the English Version of Bi Feiyu’s Three Sisters
I。A Brief Introduction to the Thesis
1。1 Three Sisters and Its English Version
Bi Feiyu, born in Jiangsu province in 1964, is a distinguished Chinese contemporary writer, whose representative works include Three Sisters, The Moon Opera and Massage etc。 He has won “Lu Xun Literary Prize”twice, the fourth “Man Asian Literary Prize”, the eighth “Mao Dun prize”etc。 Three Sisters has been a very significant milestone in the history of Chinese contemporary literature, through which, Bi Feiyu describes three sisters: Yumi, Yuxiu, and Yuyang who live in Wangjiazhuang, analyzes their different personalities and portrays their misery fates。 The common but special relationships among three sisters, and that between their surroundings and them can find full expressions in this book。 Especially, what deserves to be mentioned is that there exist abundant folk languages which incisively and vividly reflect vernacular culture during the Chinese Cultural Revolution period。 Meanwhile, the folk languages embody the Chinese culture。
Some critics believe that Bi Feiyu's verbal narrative is imbued with inpiduality。 The reader will be immersed in his language world unwittingly, which is full of sensibility, and find that his work is full of sceneries, which cannot be imitated, as this is a style, and the language is Bi Feiyu's "signature”。
Howard Goldblatt is a famous American translator and sinologist。 So far, he has translated more than 50 works written by 25 writers including Mo Yan, Lao She, Feng Jicai, Ba Jin, Xiao Hong, Jia Pingwa, and so on。 Dai Naidie once said that Goldblatt added some elements of British and American contemporary literature to the Chinese literature 。
