1。1 Research Background
In literature, animal metaphor is regarded as a kind of cultural symbol through the long history of civilization. With the implication from the original meaning,it can transfer the delicate emotion of literary work and inspire endless imagination in readers。 Animal metaphors in Macbeth which has special meanings in Shakespeare’s own culture, are abundantly used。 Therefore, those animal translations are very significant and effective in conveying the original flavor and bringing similar aesthetic feelings to readers。 However, the translators must be faced with a problem---translator’s subjectivity while translating animal metaphor, which is caused by linguistic and cultural differences。 The tragedies that the translator adopts will definitely influence the theme and character building of the original text and the understanding of the target readers。
1。2 Significance of the Study
This paper mainly puts stress on the Chinese translation of animal metaphors in Macbeth by Zhu Shenghao。 Attempts will be made to find out the underlying relationship between animals’ translation and translator’s subjectivity。 Through classifying his methods of translating animals in Macbeth and illustrating each one with examples, attention will be paid to how the translator’s subjectivity affects the translation of animal metaphors。Animal metaphors have the advantages of being impressive and vivid。 By using metaphors, a short sentence or phrase may deliver a series of meanings and bring a vivid association to the readers’ mind。 The creation of rich animal metaphors in Macbeth reflects distinct ways of using the language resources of his time and exploring them with his own ideas。 When we go through persified metaphors in Shakespeare’s plays, it is found that metaphors are even associated with the theme of plays and certain emotion of the character。
The frequent appearance of animal metaphors in Macbeth whether metaphors are well translated or not, will have great impact on the quality of translation including the transference of the theme and the description of characters。 Therefore, to translate animal metaphors properly in Macbeth is of great significance。论文网
