Abstract   Deliberate misinterpretation (DMI for short) is a special pragmatic strategy in verbal communication. Although the hearer correctly and completely understands the intended meaning of the speaker, deliberately distorts the speaker’s original meaning by making use of a special context or the ambiguous expressions in the speaker’s utterances. By doing this, the hearer achieves his own communicative goals. The present paper based on some major pragmatic theories and principles, i.e., Brown & Levinson’s Face Theory, Leech’s Politeness Principle. These theories constitute the pragmatic apparatuses of DMI. The realization ways and pragmatic effects of DMI are analyzed in detail through qualitative study with many daily conversational such as data base. In verbal communication, the pragmatic strategy of DMI is often used for the purposes of saving face, showing politeness, avoiding embarrassment, avoiding getting humiliation or getting disadvantageous inference. The present paper is aimed at concrete expressions and pragmatic functions of DMI. Ⅰ. Introduction

Deliberate Misinterpretation (DMI for short) is a marked pragmatic phenomenon happening between two interlocutors in communication, in which the speaker’s communicative intention is factually understood but deliberately distorted for some pragmatic motivations. The pragmatic study of DMI is an effective means of interpreting DMI. It will help direct our daily communications and provide guidelines for people on how to appropriately employ DMI to fulfill their communicative intentions and ensure the smooth communication. For example,
(Scene: two married couples see two young lovers kissing nearby when they are walking in a park.)
Wife: Why don’t you do that?
Husband: Daring, I haven’t got to know that girl yet.
In this conversation, the husband deliberately misinterprets the deixis “that” used by her wife. Obviously, what the wife wants to convey is that she wants her husband to kiss her like the two younger instead of kissing that girl. The indeterminacy of the deixis, “that”, provides a chance for her husband to misinterpret her meaning in order to create a humorous atmosphere.
