I. Introduction
Ralph Ellison is a famous African American writer. He was born in 1914 in Oklahoma City, named by his father after Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ellison is best known for his novel Invisible Man ( 1952 ), which won the National Book Award in 1953. Invisible Man is narrated in the first person’s tone by the protagonist without name. The narrator is an African-American man who considers himself socially invisible because people never see his true self beneath the roles that stereotype and racial prejudice compel him to play. Though the narrator is outstanding, knowledgeable, and highly gifted with language, he could not be treated equally in the society was dominated by white people. As the story progresses, the narrator’s illusions are gradually destroyed through his experiences as a student at college, as a worker at the Liberty Paints plant and as a member of a political organization known as the Brotherhood. The narrator says that he has stayed underground ever since, the end of his story is also the beginning. At the end he declares that he is aware of his inpidual complexity and his own identity without sacrificing his responsibility to the community. And not only that, the narrator says that he is at last ready to break away from underground. The theme of the novel is the awakening of the narrator’s self-consciousness. The title Invisible Man told us the living conditions. The paper would discuss the narrator’s self-consciousness in several stages, such as the experiences of the narrator’s college life, working life and political life during his growing-up time, etc.
