This thesis, not like other essays that start from the analysis of social background, literature traditions and Dickens’ real life experience, will classify David’s growth into three main stages and pide main female characters into three images: mother, wife and friends. Then the most important part is the comprehensive analysis of female characters’ impacts on David’s self-development in second chapter. Third chapter is to summarize Dickens’ inheritance and breakthrough of traditional view on female according to above illustration of the impacts of female characters. His vivid and concrete description of those female characters gives us an image of the living condition of woman in the Victorian era that epitomize the real English social life of the 19th century. In fourth chapter, this paper intends to explore the overall status of Victorian women and developmental trend of feminist movement.
