The Comparative Study from the Angle of the Domestication and Foreignization in Two English Versions of Six Chapters of a Floating Life
Chapter One Introduction
With the rapid expansion of western civilization, the output of essence in Chinese traditional language and culture is particularly necessary. Six Chapters of a Floating Life has always played an important role in Chinese prose history. Based on the theory of the German linguist Schleiermacher, two translation strategies were put forward by Venuti, which are known as domestication and foreignization. In last few years, this two translation strategies have widely elevated public discourse among Chinese translation industry.
1.1 The Purpose and Significance of the Study
Through the comparative study in Lin Yutang and Shirley M. Black’s English versions, translation strategies of the two translations are focal points in this paper, from which we can summarize and compare the cultural tendency of two translators, develop a correct understanding of the translation function served as cultural transmission, criticize throughout translation in different cultural contexts, and thereby to support balanced development of translation and accelerate further Sino-Foreign cultural exchanges.源`自*优尔?文.论/文`网[www.youerw.com
1.2 The Framework of the Paper
In chapter one, the significance and purpose of the study will be presented, as well as the overall structure. Later in chapter two, former studies from home and abroad will be firstly demonstrated so as to form the theoretical support and implementation for this study, and the following statement is mainly on the innovation points and study space.
Then in part three and part four, there will be a brief introduction on the definitions and principles of the two translation strategies and a comparison supported by 5 examples about how they developed, applied under the hands of the two distinctive translators.
In this paper, through the comparison in translation strategies between Lin’s translation and Black’s, Chapter five primarily summarizes two different cultural orientations and how they impart different cultural identities was demonstrated.
Chapter Two Literature Review
Six Chapters of a Floating life by Lin contains rich Chinese cultural elements. How to deal with these cultural elements, what kinds of translation strategies were adopted in Lin's version and Black's, and what the impact of the original, etc., are closely related to the translation purpose. So this paper will analysis from cases and examples, how Lin Yutang and Shirley M. Black blend the strategies of foreignization and domestication, without affecting the readability to show the world Chinese culture under the guidance of translation purposes; at the same time by comparing two versions in their applied translation strategies, two different cultural orientations and how they impart different cultural identities was demonstrated.
