Here comes the second classroom. The Second Classroom can provide students with more time and opportunities to learn English. Thus, the writer thinks it is necessary to carry out English reading teaching in the second classroom.

1.2 Purpose and significance of the Study

There are many studies on the second classroom of middle school, but most of them are about the teaching mode, meaning and practice form of the second classroom. These researches mainly focus on the overall functions of the second classroom. However, the researches about English reading teaching are relatively less. The writer thinks that English reading teaching is not only scientific, but it is also a work of art. It is very important that the researchers figure out how to carry out the English reading teaching of the second classroom, how to arouse students' interest in English reading. In order to combine the second classroom and English reading teaching properly to improve students' interest in learning English and to improve their English reading ability, the researchers did the investigations and researches in Linping No.3 Middle School.

1.3 Research Question and Value

    In the study four research questions will be conducted:

    1. What is the present situation of the second classroom of English reading teaching in junior high school?

    It is necessary to know the present situation of junior high school English second classroom reading teaching, for this can help us understand the situation, analyze the existing problems, and then explore the corresponding countermeasures.

2. What are the principles of choosing reading materials in the second classroom of English reading teaching in junior high school?

Since the researchers are going to research the problems of English reading teaching, the choice of reading materials becomes an extremely important part. It is believed that different subjects, contents, language style can significantly affect the students’ reading interest. Therefore, it can also influence the results of the research.

    3. How to deal with the extracurricular reading materials to improve students' reading comprehension ability?

It is the ultimate purpose of my study to gain some suggestion for the English development of junior school students. This will have important significance for the future of English reading teaching. And this can be guidelines for teachers how to use extracurricular reading materials.论文网

2 Literature review

2.1 Definition of the second classroom

Boaz Shulruf (2011) proposes: as part of students' school day, students participate in a wide variety of activities, over and above the core curricular teaching and learning classroom work, which are usually referred to as co-curricular or extra-curricular activities, also called the second classroom. It includes activities that don’t be required in the teaching syllabus and schedules. Zhang zhiyuan (1985) held that “second classroom” includes any situations except classroom English teaching in which students are enabled to improve their English linguistic competence in general and communicative competence in particular. Thus, the so-called “second classroom” is indeed an expanded classroom, an indispensable part of English learning.

2.2 Researches Home

    During recent ten years in our country, the research about English reading teaching mainly focuses on the classroom teaching. The researchers summarized their teaching experiences, and submit their own proposals to improve English reading ability. However, the English reading teaching, especially the application of extracurricular reading materials, is not studied deeply. Most studies focus on the colleges and high schools, but there are less attention being put on the English extracurricular reading teaching of the junior high school.
