2。 Literature Review

The differences between tea and coffee have been studied in the area of culture for years。 We usually think that coffee is the representative of western culture and many people like it。 So is tea in China。 But in the promotion of it, the western countries do it better。 In the modern cities of China like Beijing, Shanghai, coffee becomes a common drink in our daily life。 Owing to this, too many studies about the differences between tea and coffee have been reported in the existing literature。

When it comes to the Chinese tea, one is reminded of the book “The classic of Tea”, the earliest work about tea, which introduced the tea systematically。 As we all know, tea is a drink which origins from China。 (关剑平,2009:8) Tea was very popular in Qing dynasty of China because Qian Long, an emperor, liked drinking tea。 After that, tea was known by all over the word for that many foreigners came to China in Qing dynasty。 When considering the issue of its origin, we can find that there are many disputes about it。 By the way, it’s considered as a common sense that Tea originates in China。 A book by Zhen Peikai describes the tea and Chinese culture。 It introduces the tea industry systematically and studies the development of Tea。 It analyzes the benefits of tea and proposes the prospects of tea industry。 China tea culture influences the neighboring countries like Japan, Vietnam, Korea and more。 (郑培凯,2009;112) From the side of coffee, it is seen as the daily drink in western countries。 By comparing the two kinds of drink, we can get known many things related with culture in many aspects。 Many people thought about to study the culture of China-West。 They took the example of Starbucks because it is the classic successful brand of coffee in the world。 Chen Xinxing also talks about the Starbucks’ cross-cultural sale strategy in his paper。 He says that the cultural differences can arose the conflict between the different cultures。 (陈鑫星,2012) But considering spreading our Chinese culture by tea, it is also discussed what should our Chinese tea learn from Starbucks。(孙秋玲,2003) 

In my opinions, this paper is intend to make more comparison of tea and coffee from the cultural cognition and learn the good way of coffee to promoting our Chinese tea culture。 It is good to study the cultural differences for that it can relate the cross-culture with coffee and tea in culture。 文献综述

3。 Cultural cognition

Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses。 Culture is defined as a social domain that emphasizes the practices, discourses, and material expressions, which, over time, express the continuities and discontinuities of social meaning of a life held in common。 Each culture has its own unique style and connotation。 The definition of cultural cognition appeared at 1920s。 It means “study and grasp of culture”。 The cultural cognition process will change along with the increase of years。 Sapir, American linguists, pointed that language depends on environment。 It couldn’t be separated from the tradition and belief inherited from society。 And in 1940s, C。C。Fries, American Language teaching expert, urged that people should pay more attention on culture in foreign language learning, cultural differences and cultural comparison。 So you should acknowledge others’ culture if you want to have a talk with each other。 Culture cognition involves many aspects of intercultural communication。 So people should keep the cultural awareness all the time when they communicate with someone in different cultural background。 Because of that, cultural cognition has been the basis of international communication。 It plays an important role in intercultural communications。 As this paper talked, tea and coffee represent the different culture。 This can totally apply the cultural cognition in the communication of China and the west in the aspects of daily drink。
