Abstract Shakespeare is not only the most famous literary giant in the world, but also a master of language。 He loves to play with words。 In his plays, he employs various figures of speech skillfully, which makes his expression vivid, colorful, concise and grab readers’ eyes。 There are few persons who can use oxymoron, one of the most unique rhetorical devices, with the greatest freedom and ease like Shakespeare。79369
Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet are the classic works in which Shakespeare employs oxymoron skillfully in his plays。 As one of rhetorical devices, oxymoron juxtaposes elements that appear to be contradictory or even largely different, so it can create deep meaning。 It is seemingly self-contradictory or ridiculous in meaning, but it makes sense。 Oxymoron can expresses contradictory moods and subjective sensation of character and increases reader’s involvement much more so as to increase expressive force of text。 Furthermore, oxymoron could increase the conflicts in dramas and highlight the theme。 This paper analyzes the function and effect of oxymoron reflected in the two plays from the perspective of rhetorical function so as to enable readers know oxymoron very well and employ it in writing。

莎士比亚戏剧作品中矛盾修辞法的分析—以《哈姆雷特》和《罗密欧与朱丽叶》为例
摘要莎士比亚不仅是世界文学史上最富盛名的文学巨匠, 也还是一个语言大师。 他喜欢玩文字游戏。在剧作中,他很擅长使用英语修辞,使得表达更生动多彩并 且富有力量,非常吸引读者。很少有人可以像莎士比亚那样如此自如地运用矛盾 修辞法这一特殊的修辞手段。
在莎士比亚剧作中,《哈姆雷特》和《罗密欧与朱丽叶》是其运用矛盾修辞 法的经典作品。矛盾修辞法作为一种修辞手段,它能够将两种不相调和,甚至截 然相反的词组合在一起,产生特殊的深刻含义。从字面意义上看,它自相矛盾甚 至是荒谬的,但它包含了实际意义。相比其他修辞手法,矛盾修辞法更能表现出 人物复杂的心情和矛盾的情感,使读者融入其中,进而增加文章表现力。而且, 矛盾修辞法可以增强戏剧冲突,从而突出戏剧主题。本篇论文主要从修辞功能视 角,结合两部作品的实例分析矛盾修辞法的作用和效果,从而达到让读者熟知矛 盾修辞法并在英语写作中加以运用的目的。
