Abstract There is growing concern over the translation of legal English under the policy of reform and opening-up, especially after China’s entry into the WTO。 Although the legal English, as an ESP (English for Special Purposes), is becoming increasingly important, the research concerned seems to be inadequate。 Therefore, a tentative study on language features and translation strategies of legal English was conducted in this thesis, focusing on the language features of English legal texts in terms of their lexicon, syntax, rhetoric and pragmatic。 The four basic principles for translation of English legal texts, namely, accuracy, norms, consistency and creativity, were presented respectively。 Moreover, four specific translation techniques, namely, conversion, supplement, omission and rearrangement of word order were proposed and expounded in detail。80747

The result of the study has shown that an intimate knowledge of features of legal English, and a firm grasp of translation principles and techniques will greatly contribute to the quality of translated legal texts。 As for the inpidual, the aim of paper is to benefit the beginners or amateur who attempt to translate English legal texts, and the research is very useful for not only heightening their sensitivity toward legal English, but also improving translation ability of theirs。 At the same time, it could enhance their knowledge in law and English。

摘要中国的改革开放尤其在加入世界贸易组织后，法律方面的翻译受到了人们越来越多的关注。尽管法律英语作为一种特殊用途英语显得日益重要，但相关的研究工作却未成规模。本文旨在探究法律英语的语言特征及翻译策略，重点从词汇，句法，修辞和语用层面，详细探讨了英语法律文本的语言特点。在此基础上，作者总结提出了四个法律翻译原则：准确性原则、规范性原则、一致性原则、以及创新性原则。此外，本文还详细探讨了这四种原则主要适合英语法律文本翻译的技巧：转换，增补，省略和调整。

本论文得出的结论是清楚并熟悉法律英语语言特点，掌握好对应特点的翻译原则与技巧，对于提高个人法律英语翻译能力及英语法律文本的质量有很大的意义。研究此课题的目的，从个人来说，有利于法律英语初学者或爱好者，这不仅能增加他们对法律英语语言的敏感度，也能提高他们对英语法律翻译的能力，同时还能了解一些法律知识。

1 Introduction

With of the growing trend of economic globalization, the economic and cultural exchanges between countries are also gradually increasing the demand for legal English translation。 More cooperation between state-owned enterprises and foreign enterprises involves the signing of contracts on legal information。 Therefore, the translation of this area has become the main focus of the translation industry。 But for the translation of legal documents, the translator must possess high quality of self-awareness, because this is a very strict industry。 To maintain the quality of translation, sufficient legal knowledge and in-depth research are indispensible。 Otherwise, it is difficult to achieve a satisfying translation effect; in particular, it will lead to a variety of adverse and undesirable consequences。 In addition, the process of legal English translation also relate to the other areas of development, so the translation of legal English texts is essential。 After all, it is not only can promote economic exchanges, but also the key to international development。 However, the translations of legal texts on the market are uneven。 Some of the translation of laws and regulations are not meet the characteristics of the translation of legal terms can be seen everywhere。 Moreover, speaking of national interests, learning legal English is a massive step to move to the global stage, seeking justice for the customers, helping domestic enterprises develop and reducing the amount of lose to mishandle。
