2。 Literature Review
“The domestic research on Woolf generally can be pided into two categories: one category is the general comment, including research on Woolf's creative thought, literary view and her life and the influence on writing; another kind is to work for the review, including works of art achievement, performance skills 。" (Gao 2004) "The study on the narrative structure of the novel and the technique accounted for a large proportion, including the stream of consciousness, feminist perspective, interior monologue and poetic structure, the study of androgyny。" (Zhao 122-125) Woolf's To the Lighthouse belongs to the stream of consciousness of love novels, is the psychological activity description。 The interpretation and research of this work mainly concentrates on the narrative point of view。 Woolf keenly grasped the rational and emotional confusion, the "binary opposition" in reference to the novel creation, strive to reflect the complex contradiction between inner world。 To the Lighthouse including most of life’s contraction, opposition and conflict, character's personality contradictions is also portrayed in the play。 Of course, presenting contradictions is not the ultimate goal of Woolf, her real goal is to seek out of the way to achieve ultimate harmony in life。 Her thought beyond the traditional dualism because she abandoned the binary absolutely opposing ideas, she thought the dual sides are both contradictory and complement with each other and they should be in harmony in a dynamic balance。 The idea through her novel all the time。 To the lighthouse centralized embodies Woolf in constant pursuit of a rational and perceptual dual harmonious。 To the Lighthouse as the representative work of Woolf, the authors concentrate on new concept of view。 Woolf through the three characters Ramsay, Mrs。Ramsay, Lili's description to show the shifting point of view, limited point of view and multiple viewpoints。 论文网
3。 Narrative Point of View
Narrative point of view, simply said, it is to point to who and how to storytelling narrative story。 In the traditional novels, writers always use omniscient perspective and the narrators are almighty "god" because they know everything and they can see everything, which often let the novel containing traces of subjective preaching and human creation。 As one of the leading modernist novelists, Woolf use a new narrative point of view, which can show character’s rich and exquisite spiritual life。 In the novel To the Lighthouse, Woolf uses a lot of limited point of view and third person narration。 The use of the unique narrative technique, makes the narrator seemed to be hidden in the works of the characters, borrow the characters of the subjective consciousness and feel sometimes weeks, with the world。 In the first part of the first chapter, for example, children laugh at a friend of Mrs。Ramsay called Mr。Tansley。 In order to apologize and to alleviate this embarrassing atmosphere, Mrs。Ramsay invite he to go out for a walk。 Wolf wrote like that:“ He followed her into the drawing- room, that young man they laughed at; he was standing by the table, fidgeting with something, awkwardly, feeling himself out of things as she knew without looking round。 They had all gone the children; Minta Doyle and Paul Rayley, Augustus Carmichael, her husband—they had all gone。 So she turned with a sigh and said:“ Would it bore you to come with me, Mr。Tansley?” (Woolf 2005:158) We can feel that Woolf wrote these words at the point view of Mrs。Ramsey, but we can know from the first sentence that Mrs。Ramsey turned her back on him, so he certainly didn’t know Mr。Tansley is fidgeting with something。 If Wolf use narrative elements, readers will know it easily (Cremer 1992)。 Through the character’s limited angle of narrative, narrative angle limited in the perception of the characters within a category, when readers are reading, they will flow with the consciousness of the character, it seemed that they were there so they can clearly grasp the character’s psychological change。 But if it’s a character consciousness flow, it will not be able to obtain comprehensive effect。
