2。1 Old Man and the Sea: Love and Reverence for Nature
In The Old Man and the Sea, the author showed the reader with a picture of the harmony between the old man and the sea。 The sea was sparkling and quiet, besides, the birds were flying over the sea, stopped and fell on the tree to rest when they tired。 Sometimes the fish jumped out of the water, and ped into the sea in a flash, to add some vitality for the quiet sea。 Meanwhile, the distant fishing boat also lying quietly on the sea, the old fisherman Santiago was a member of the ship。 He overlooked the boundless sea and appreciated the beautiful scenery with infinite love to the sea。
The old man loved the green turtles and hawks-bills。 And flying fish was his main friend in the sea。 A bird flew from the north towards the small boat。 It was a warbler and flying very low on the sea。 The old man could see that the small bird was very tired。 “Stay at my house if you like, bird,” he said。 “I am sorry I can not hoist the sail and take you in with the small breeze that is rising。 But I am with a friend。” At night, two dolphins swam around the skiff and the old man could hear the sound of their rolling and watering。 He could discern the difference by his ears between the rolling noise the male made and the blowing noise the female made。 In the eyes of the old fisherman Santiago, the sea and all creatures in the sea were so harmonious。 He regarded the sea as a beautiful woman, and the sea, accompanied the old man everyday, resolved his inner loneliness which resulted him in having deep feelings of attachment to the sea。 The whole sea world described in Hemingway’s written was a quiet and perfect world。 These beautiful and harmonious pictures made the readers fascinated and on the other hand also reflected the author’s own natural ecological view。 That human beings should live in harmony with nature, communion symbiosis, and should attach to nature for existence。 All of these expressed the Hemingway’s infinite and selfless love and reverence to the nature。
2。2 Old Man and Marlin: The Conflict between Man and Nature
However, it was not always calm in the sea world, there would be raging waves and even staged scenes of bloody fight scenes。 The fierce struggle between the old man and the big marlin broke the usual calmness on the sea。 The old man has just gone 84 days without taking a fish。 On the 85th day, Santiago takes his boat out much farther into the sea than usual。 But he didn’t hold out much hope, just took a chance as usual。 But an amazing thing happened, The old man actually encountered a big marlin whose weight was more than 1500 pounds。 Although he loved the fish and regarded it as his brother, and even showed his sympathy to the marlin, in order to make his living, Santiago had to kill the Marlin, so that they made a tough confrontation which lasted for three days and two nights。
In the first day, The Marlin was hooked。 “He’s taken it,” the old man said。 “Now I’ll let him eat it well。” The old man let the fishing line slip through his fingers while he reached down with his left hand and made fast the free end of the two reserve coils to the loop of the two reserve coils of the next line。 And now the old man was ready。 At the moment, he had three forty-fathom coils of line which were available for spare, in addition to the coil he was using now。 But to be honest, the old man did not feel good for the reason that the pain from the rope across his back had almost passed pain。文献综述
In the second day, the Marlin jumped out of the ocean again and again。 The old man woke up with his right fist suddenly hit his face and the fishing line slipped out of his right hand。 His left hand lost consciousness, so he had to use his right hand desperately pulled the fishing line, but it was still struggling to slip out。 His left hand finally caught the fishing line, he rose up the body to pull the line back and now the fishing line burned the back and the left hand of the old man, and his left hand was taking all the strain and hurting heavily。 The old man looked back at the bags of fishing line and they were slipping out of the fishing line。 At that moment, the big marlin jumped up and made a big bursting of the sea, and then fell heavily。 Then the big marlin jumped again and again and the skiff went fast although the fishing line was still slipping out and the old man was holding the strain to breaking point and holding it to breaking point again and again。 The old man was pulled closed to the bow and his face was attached to the cut slice of dolphin and he could not move any more。
