Redemption, why the one who fulfilling the historical mission is Gollum? Actually, that is the author wants to convey religious concerns and forgiveness to everybody。 In the novel, when Frodo first knew that his uncle Bilbo didn’t kill Gollum and gets the ring from him, he wonders why。 And then Gandalf explains to him the meaning of mercy。 He thinks that no one has the power to punish anyone。 The evil will soon or later be punished。 Only the God has the ability to forgive and pity the evil。 Bilbo’s mercy to the Gollum influences many people’s fate in this novel; it is this Gollum who escaped from Bilbo’s sword that destroyed the Ring at last。 In spirituality, Bilbo’s mercy and Gandalf’s explanation for mercy are the same as Christ’s mercy to Cain。 Human should always have the compassion。 Even if the Gollum in The Lord of the Ring who was tortured by sin and barely looked like human or the Cain in Bible who killed his own brother all should be pitied and have the chance to be redeemed。 In the West, because of the influence of Original Sin, the redemption has been widely accepted。 In the redemption, Frodo is a representative of the Martyrs。 Jesus carried the cross, in his own suffering to atone for humans’ sin; Frodo carried the Ring, suffered both physically and mentally, and finally destroyed the Ring。 In Tolkien’s opinion, the inner heart is the only key to redemption, which is shown in the Old Testament。
2。3 Narrative Perspective of Resurrection
Resurrection。 Resurrection is a longstanding dream of humans, reposing the wishes of people to defeat and transcend the death。 The most mystical description in the New Testament, is the Jesus’ resurrection。 Anthropologist James Fraser proposed that the faith of Adonis --- the Goddess of resurrection plants popularity in the ancient Middle East, is the prototype of Jesus’ resurrection (Speed 586)。 Tolkien also established the similar resurrection scene in The Lord of the Rings。 In the Barrow-downs, Frodo has experienced an imaginative death。 After his grip of fear for hours, he has resurrected。 Someone who had read the New Testament --- Matthew chapter must remember the scene that the angel reports Jesus’ Resurrection。 From Frodo’s resurrection and Jesus’ resurrection, we can find the author’s Catholicism faith。 Gandalf’s resurrection also uses the prototype of resurrection。 In order to protect the teammate, Gandalf was fighting with the Balrog and finally dropped off the cliffs。 When they meet again, Gandalf not only came back to life but also upgraded from Grey to White。 In religion, because of the Original Sin, death came into the world。 But, it is not the end。 God loves everyone and God’s mercy gives everyone a chance to atone for sin, and thus appears Resurrection。 Resurrection cleans us from sin both physically and mentally。 All sinnners gain the new life, natural, pure and white。来;自]优Y尔E论L文W网www.youerw.com +QQ752018766-
In essence, The Lord of the Ring is about faith and Catholicism。 It is unintentional when he starts his creation, but in the process of amending he began to intend to this direction because the religious elements are already infiltrated into the story, and have been integrated into the symbolic significance。 The religious perspective of the Original Sin, the Redemption and the Resurrection in Tolkien’s work is in conformity with the tenets that Bible spreads。 He wants to transmit the positive energy to readers and inspire people come back to Catholic faith through structure of Middle-earth and all kinds of characters。
