Abstract
Thomas Hardy wrote a novel Jude the Obscure that depicts the tragic fate of a nobody Jude Fawley and the tragic love story between him and Sue. Human being’s erotic desire, decadence and rapacity are against the social rigid moral standard and the complicated features of human being’s frail psychological inner world dooms the extermination of both Jude and Sue’s mental world as well as physical body. Both of them are anxious about how others look upon them as well as tortured by the hypocritical society in which they are struggling for freedom and marriage. However, the power of the social background overrides any cry of liberation and does not allow any immoral behavior and abnormal love affair. This essay will mainly focus on the symbolism and narration about the novel.

托马斯哈代的《无名的裘德》讲述的是一个无名小卒裘德的悲惨命运以及他与表妹苏之间的悲剧爱情。人性的欲望、堕落与贪婪抵抗不住严格的社会道德标准，人性脆弱的内心世界一些复杂的因素都早已注定要毁掉裘德和苏的灵魂与肉体。他们十分在乎旁人的看法，同时也被这社会异样的眼光所折磨，对此他们在水深火热中寻求自由和婚姻。但社会强大的力量还是战胜了他们，这段不伦之恋注定是要被毁灭的。此篇论文主要研究哈代关于象征手法的运用以及对故事的叙述。

1 Introduction
In this essay, the topic of symbolism narration will be mainly discussed and the reason why this topic is chosen is that symbolism plays a vital role in any narration which is used to convey a deep and profound meaning designed by the author.
