1 Introduction
1。1 Research Background
Logical connectives include conjunctions, coordinating and subordinating, adverbs, adverbial phrases, and so on。 Explicitation of logical connectives refers to a means of adding connectives in the text of target language to make the implied logical relation in the source text explicit。 The theory of hypotaxis and parataxis has taken an important place in studying explicitation translation of logical connectives, and it is often used in translation of a single sentence。 Addition of conjunctions, as a strategy of explicitation of logical connectives, has been the focus in the research field for a long time。
Since the study of discourse has been strongly proposed by researchers recently, there is a need to study the translation explicitation of logical connectives between sentences。 Cohesion in semantics and logical relation is one of the essential characteristics of the discourse or texture。 The theory of hypotaxis and parataxis can no longer meet the new demand of the research。 The cohesive function of logical connectives such as adverbs and adverbial phrases is of increasing significance in explicitation translation。
1。2 Significance of the Study
By applying the cohesion theory into Chinese-English translation, this paper mainly discusses the explicitation strategies of logical connectives in Chinese-English translation。 Based on the previous researches that mostly focus on addition of conjunctions in a sentence, this paper intends to expand upon addition of adverbs and adverbial phrases between sentences and combine these strategies for application in translation of a short paragraph。 The strategies mainly include addition of conjunctions, of adverbs or adverbial phrases, and of conjunctions and adverbs。
According to the theory of cohesion, the words such as adverbs and adverbial phrases joining the ideas between sentences are cohesive, but the cohesive power actually lies in the underlying semantic relation。 “We are often prepared to recognize the presence of a logical relation even when it is not expressed overtly at all。 And we are prepared to supply it for ourselves, and thus to assume that there is cohesion even though it has not been explicitly demonstrated。” (Halliday & Hasan, 1976, p。229) Although two sentences are by definition separate structures that are not connected grammatically, they still need to be connected logically。 Sometimes the logical relation is self-evident, but often a word is needed to make it explicit (Joan Pinkham, 2000, p。379)。 As the cohesion is mainly achieved through conjunctive expression like adverbs or adverbial phrases, the translator should add these logical connectives to reveal the implied cohesive relation。
3 Organization
In the first chapter, research background, significance of the study and research method will be introduced。 Research method includes source and analysis of examples, and reasons for selection。 The second and the third chapters mainly presents the literature reviews and theoretical framework。 In this part, the theories of cohesion and translation explicitation will be explained。 The last chapter provides three types of strategies of explicitation of logical connectives。 The strategies mainly include addition of conjunctions, of adverbs or adverbial phrases, and of conjunctions and adverbs。 There are ten examples for demonstrating the strategies of translation explicitation of logical connectives。From+优|尔-论_文W网wWw.YouErw.com 加QQ752018.766 汉英翻译中逻辑连词显化策略研究(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_142662.html
