Previous researches on translation explicitation also found that one of explicitation strategies is to add necessary words of which the meanings are implied in the original (Jiang & Dong, 2009), As indicators of semantic relations, logical connectives, mostly conjunctions, are often added in Chinese-English translation。 Under the guidance of the theory of hypotaxis and parataxis, Shao’s study (2013) on explicitation of logical connectives is restricted in translation of a single sentence, so only addition of conjunctions is discussed in the study of the Chinese-English translation explicitation。
Yu’s study (2011) is related with cohesive connection between sentences。 And it also presents the distinction between the two languages that there is a large number of connectives frequently used in the English language, whereas the number of the connectives in the Chinese is quite small。 The Chinese language omits these connectives freely, because it relies on logical relation to establish cohesion within or between sentences。 On the contrary, logical connectives are considered essential in the English language。 The cohesive words such as adverbs “however,” “but,” “moreover,” and so on join the preceding sentence and the following one in English are important clues that help the discourse achieve logical cohesion, but because of the innate logicality of the Chinese sentence pattern, these adverbs are not needed to express logical relation between the ideas in the sentences。文献综述
According to the semantics, Chang and Wang (2014) classify logical relations in discourse into four types: additive, adversative, causal and temporal。 The distinction of conjunctives of texture between the Chinese and the English lies in implicit and explicit conjunction。 Implicit conjunction expresses the semantic relation in discourse by virtue of logical relation between sentences or paragraphs。 The Chinese language usually uses implicit conjunction, so logical connectives are often omitted, which must be added in the Chinese-English translation。
