Abstract
Jack London is one of the most famous realistic novelists in the world. Among all of his novels, Martin Eden is regarded as the most famous and successful one. As an autobiography of Jack London based on the description of the protagonist, Martin Eden, this novel helps us to explore people’s values of love and marriage and the social environment as well in America at that time.
This essay takes the novel Martin Eden as the research background to explore people’s love and marriage values at that time and also takes the love tragedy of the two protagonists in the novel, Ruth Morse and Martin Eden, to analyze people’s views on the proportion of fortune put on the scale of love and its causes and effects under that social background. This essay also aims to explore people’s love and marriage values as well as their value orientation by reference to the story Martin Eden by Jack London. Meanwhile, people’s love and marriage values and the value orientation are revealed and the equilibrium of love and economy in a relationship is also explored through the comparison and contrast of the research results on both foreign and Chinese peoples’ love values in different times. This topic shows its own realistic value especially in the current materialistic society with fast economic expansion.
This thesis is principally pided into five parts. Chapter one is the introduction part. Chapter two presents the brief background introduction of Martin Eden and analyzes the love and marriage value of the two protagonists in the novel. Chapter three analyzes the position of fortune in a relationship and how the family background affect love in both the novel and the modern society. Chapter four discusses the equilibrium between love and economy in a relationship. Chapter five is the conclusion.
