Chapter One Introduction
Functional equivalence theory is one of the most important translation theories, whose purpose is to achieve maximum information equivalence between a source text and its target text. Functional equivalence theory breaks traditional ideas, bringing modern linguistics, communication theory, information theory, semiotics and aesthetics into the field of translation, and providing a new perspective for translation research(Qin Yin,2009). The theory takes new thinking ways into translation, which establish a firm foundation for modern science of translation. With the acceleration of globalization, exchanges between countries are increasing, including film and television works. People of different countries can understand each other’s politics, cultures, life style through the appreciation of those film and television works. Therefore, if people want to understand meanings of those film and television works, subtitle translation plays a particularly important role. Compared with general translation of literary works, the research of subtitle translation is relatively late. Although subtitle translation has its own unique characteristics and difficulty, functional equivalence theory provides a scientific guidance for the research of subtitle translation, and make contribution to the accuracy of subtitle translation. Tinker,Tailor, Soldier,Spy is a spy movie released in 2011. The movie was adapted by the work of British national literature master -John le Carre. The relationship between the characters and plots are quite complex in the movie, together with the queer narration with constant flashbacks and foreshadowing. The whole movie involves around explicit characters of branch lines. In the movie, there are lots of characters, complex historical background events, standard office procedures, extensive slang and folk adages and so on, which increase the difficulty of understanding of the film and the difficulty of translation. This paper will take specific examples in the movie Tinker,Tailor, Soldier,Spy to expound the application of functional equivalence theory in subtitle translation. It consists of five chapters.
Chapter one is the brief introduction to functional equivalence theory, subtitle translation and their internal relation.
Chapter two is a literature review to functional equivalence theory, analysis of subtitle translation, and application of the theory in subtitle translation.
Chapter three is the research of subtitle translation, which consist characteristics and difficulty of functional equivalence theory.
Chapter four is focused on study of the movie and Difficult points of subtitle translation.
Chapter five is about the subtitle translation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. 《锅匠,裁缝,士兵,间谍》功能等值理论指导下的影视字幕翻译(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_18973.html
