Abstract Movies are indispensable parts of arts of mass communication in modern life, and consequently, the development of the movie industry across the world also makes subtitle translation a new and important field of translation practice。 Million Dollar Baby has made great achievements in the history of the movie that is still praiseworthy today。 Besides the well claimed narration of the story, subtitle translation plays a significant role in both showing the theme effectively and spreading across all over the world。 Whereas most of the studies of the film Million Dollar Baby place emphasis on inpidual heroism and sportsmanship, there is a lack of research on the strategies of subtitle translation。 Thus this paper adopts the case study of subtitle translation from the perspective of Nida’s functional equivalence and proposes that functional equivalence theory can be fine-tuned to provide guidance for subtitle translation practice。94663

摘要电影是现代生活中不可缺少的大众传播艺术，其发展使字幕翻译也逐渐成为一个新的翻译领域。电影《百万美元宝贝》在电影史上获得了很大的成就，至今还为人们所称赞。除了影片的故事情节外，字幕翻译对本影片内容主题的有效传达及其广泛传播到世界各地也起到了极其重要的作用。而目前对电影《百万美元宝贝》的研究都是侧重于其英雄主义价值观和体育精神，缺少对其字幕翻译的策略和质量研究。因此，本文从奈达的功能对等角度出发，对电影《百万美元宝贝》的字幕翻译进行了个案研究，得出功能对等理论可以为电影字幕翻译提供理论参考的结论。

In the present society, as globalization continues to develop, arts of mass communication are playing a more important role in the cross-cultural environment。 As major forms of arts of mass communication, movies introduces various cultures to the world。 However, audiences come from different countries with their own cultures, so there always appear language barriers in the process of appreciating foreign movies。 In our daily life it is common for audiences to rely on translated versions to enjoy movies。 Film subtitle translation thus has provided a new sight for translation practice。 As a consequence, it is absolutely critical to carry out studies on subtitle translation。
