1。 Introduction
With the globalization and the rapid development of Chinese economy, China has attracted more and more foreigners。 Every year, a huge number of foreigners come to China to study, to engage in business or to participate in other intercultural communication activities。 In order to achieve their learning and working goals, they must be more willing to understand Chinese customs and adapt to Chinese society and culture。 Regardless how long they stay in China, intercultural adaptation is of great importance to them。
Shanghai Calling (2012) is a film directed by Chinese-American Xia Wei。 This film describes an experience of Sam。 He was an ambitious New York lawyer, after being sent to Shanghai on an assignment, experienced the Chinese culture and society。 At first, he had a strong prejudice against Chinese society。 A strong culture shock was approaching him。 Then, he changed his attitudes towards China and Chinese culture。 With the help from his friends and assistant, eventually, he managed to adapt to the Chinese culture。 He changed himself from being eager to go back to New York to setting up his own law office in Shanghai。 From the title of this film, we can easily learn that it is a story related to Shanghai and New York。 Shanghai Calling seems to be a case of intellectual property rights, however, in fact that it is caused by the collisions and conflicts between different backgrounds, cultures, customs and societies。
This case study not only illustrates the cultural differences from languages, diet, etiquette and other aspects of superficial culture, but also digs out the hidden cultural differences from the aspect of collectivism and inpidualism values, friendship, face and behavior。 Through the description of the process of Sam facing Chinese culture from conflict to integration, the film Shanghai Calling reveals the trend of global culture from conflict to integration and the process of intercultural adaptation。 It is a very typically significant case for us to study sojourners how to live in a completely strange society which is apparently different from his local culture。
By analyzing both verbal and non-verbal communications in this film, this thesis attempts to detect the intercultural adaptation process of Sam in China。 All in all, the author hopes this case study can lead readers to have a better understanding of intercultural communication and adaptation and concludes some more effective suggestions to help sojourners adapt to Chinese environment and even to other countries。 从《纽约客@上海》看跨文化适应过程:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_202848.html
