1 Introduction
Stefan Zweig was an Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer. At the height of his literary career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world. He was extremely popular in the United States, South America and Europe, and remains so in continental europe. His fame in America had diminished until the 1990s, when there began an effort on the part of several publishers to get Zweig back into print in English. Plunkett Lake Press Ebooks began to publish electronic versions of his non-fiction. Since that time there has been a marked resurgence and a number of Zweig’s book are back in print.
Letter from an Unknown Woman is a novella by Stefan Zweig. Published in 1922, it tells the story of a writer who, while reading a letter written by a woman he does not remember, gets glimpses into her life story.
A lot of women images have been studied in Zweig’s novels, but the main point is completely the same that their life is miserable and pathetic. Most of them hold the opinion that the women are sustaining sad emotional experience, showing their sadness and anxiety through the novels.
Based on Feminist reading theory, a brand-new woman image is born in Letter from an Unknown Woman. Metaphor, narrative skills and irony are three focuses that in this thesis. And after being re-interpreted by the feminist reading strategy, the woman image in Letter from an Unknown Woman becomes a representative pioneer who devoted her whole life to subverting patriarchal order. She achieved her spiritual freedom by her insaneness death and libido; she refused the role that patriarchy imposed on her, and satirized the classical man image; she stuck to herself sneering at the so-called ethics and honor in patriarchal world; the heroine told her life story in her own way. The evaluation on this woman image is widely pergent from that in the previous studies. It is the feminist reading strategy that disturbs and subverts patriarchy order and penetrates deeply into cultural criticism; as for literary criticism, this reading strategy offers new standards so that texts are liberated.
This thesis tries to analyze the short story A Letter from an Unknown Woman from the perspective of Feminist Reading Theory, which is evolved from Reader Response Theory.
Above all, feminist reading strategy tries to deepen the political, economic cultural influence of feminist movements to the literature field . Its core task is to attack the long-neglected “misogyny” discourse in the male classical works, at the same time to explore the factors of sexual politics behind texts. 从女性主义阅读角度浅析《一个陌生女人的来信》中的女性形象(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_22428.html
