Title A study of the representation of the masculinity in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Abstract Jane Eyre was published in 1847, attracting much attention in English literary field. Mr.Rochester in the novel is a manor park owner, whose identity specificity and Jane have starkcontrast, and the social status of the two and the final happy ending and fiction have been highlycontroversial. Many previous researchers focused on Charlotte for shaping the character"Rochester", including exploring the Symbolism, exploring its surface image and the deeppsychological conflicts of male in Charlotte’s writing, rarely connected with the masculinity ofRochester. This paper will take Rochester’s character and the construction of masculinity as astarting point, trying to show the background of characters in Jane Eyre, and the reality of life, which reveals the decline and the whole social structure changes to Rochester as therepresentative of nobility.

. 1 Introduction1.1 Charlotte Bronte and Jane EyreCharlotte Bronte was born in 1816, a poor pastoral family in Yorkshire, and she had atough time in her childhood. She enjoyed world popularity for her glorious literarycontribution to English literature, especially in novels and poetry. As a strong advocate offeminism, Charlotte Bronte’s novels are regarded as models of modern women novels.Meanwhile, Karl Max regard her as ”a group of modern British novelists" with Dickens,Thackeray and Mrs. Gaskell.Up to now, Charlotte Bronte has published four novels, Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849),Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857).And the Professor (1857) was not published until herdeath. Moreover, she has some poetrys, such as from Retrospection (1835),and Poems byCurrer, Ellis and Acton Bell(1846) was written by the three Bronte sisters.Jane Eyre is Charlotte Bronte’s first novel which reveals the radical feminist stance of theauthor and helps to establish her as a novel writer of major significance. The novel, which tellsa story of a tutor named Jane ,is a true reflection of the situation and dilemma a womanencounters in England. Jane became an orphan in her childhood, and lived in a orphanage.Because of many reasons, Jane had enough of the life in the orphanage, and she advertised tosearch for a tutor. After successfully being a tutor in the Thornfield, she met Mr Rochester, thisarticle’s main object of study had a very elusory character in other people’s eyes. He wasmoody and gloomy, and stubborn as well. When Jane and he fell in love with each other, theyfound all this was not so plain. Rochester had got married years ago. Jane left, and searched fornew life. She met John, a crazy and enthusiastic religion, and got an abundant heritage fromher uncle. She refused John’s propose and decided to visit Rochester. After experiencing all,Jane got married with Rochester and had a happy life at last.At that time, England had been the first industrial power in the world, however, mostwomen still attached themselves to men. Since the publication of the novel coincided with therise of feminism in England, many critics immediately attached a feminist label to it, and it hasalways been used by feminists to exemplify their arguments.1.2 Literature ReviewAs the first novel of Charlotte Bronte which helped her win the international recognition, Jane Eyre, since its first publication in 1847, has been analyzed by scholars and critics fromvarious perspectives, such as feminism, both abroad and in China.Robyn R Warhol considers “duplicity as a particular feature in his product analysis, andthis is the best choice for women. They can keep balance between male and female, inner andoutside, realism and romanticism”(Warhol,1999).Harrison thinks that women affected men inevitably, and more and more literature worksshowed their response to the feminism. And the men’s movement made some analysis aboutthe social condition”(Harrison,1978).Pickree shows his point that” the effort he is making (whether he knows it or not) to regainautonomy, to reclaim or reoccupy himself, some of the absurdities in his behavior begin tomake sense, not the kind of sense we expect in a naturalistic novel, but psychological andimaginative sense of a sort appropriate to a wildly work of Jane Eyre”(Paul,1986).As soon as it had been published, the novel has been appreciated by feminists and scholarsmainly from the feminist point of view, and “it is described as the early Victorian societygender ideology of the new classical texts”(Chen Shubo,79-88).In China, many experts have great interest in Charlotte Bronte and her writings. Withregard to research treatises on Charlotte Bronte, Study on Charlotte Bronte written by ShiRubo Conducted a detailed description. In the article Dover Beach and Victorian WangXiaoyan argues,” Under the reign of Queen Victoria, the British changed the flighty anddissolute atmosphere brought by romanticism, instead by establishing many strict socialstandards. After that, all the British seemed to be gentlemen and ladies, and the scene madepeople believe it a peaceful world”(Wang Xiaoyan,83-87).Many scholars and critics in China showed their concrete analysis on the image ofRochester.”Rochester in Jane Eyre was undoubtfully a complex artistic image, we can notsimply use the word” good "or" bad "to define him or judge him, otherwise differentconclusions and different perspectives are drawn will be discussed sharply.In1987, "Seminaron the Bronte sisters” was held to discuss heatly on Mr Rochester’s image. This kind ofdiscussion was not only helpful and thinking, but also should be continued and deepgoing”(Fan Wenbing,7) 论《简爱》中男性气质与身份建构:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_25638.html
