1 Introduction
Prose is a form of literature that consists of a grammatical structure and words without any bondage and restrictions. Prose refers to no rhythms and parallelism and it is a genre which is comparatively free with one or more central theme in lyric, narrative or argumentative way. Its simplicity and loosely defined structure has led to its adoption for use in magazine, newspaper, film, broadcasting, history, miscellany, law, and travel writings.
Comparing with other forms of language, prose is more fascinating with exquisite words, abundant passions and various rhetorical devices. There are three characteristics of prose. The first characteristic is that it is loose in form but focused in soul. In other words, prose is with wide range of topics without the restrictions of specific time, space or region, with freedom in expression that is a kind of style in the least consideration of formulation, rules and patterns, which associates with lyric, narrative and argumentative ways to express emotions, with disorderly arrangement which can freely adjust according to different contents, and with explicit and centralized subject as well. The second characteristic is its abstrusity in conceptions, in general, emphasizing the essence of realistic life from which the author has seen, experienced and thought, and is strengthening in lyricism and sincerity in feelings, which embodies deeper thinking and reasons. The last but not least is its beauty of language, in particular, laconic words, natural writing style, fluent piece of writing and genuine affection that makes the whole prose vividly and refreshingly presented. In addition, prose is usually short and terse in structure.
Prose, known as beautiful writing, contains literary grace strikings as well as spiritual outlooks and melodious moods. A good prose can not only help to enrich one’s knowledge, enlarge one’s views and cultivate one’s noble sentiments, but also help to study the technique of choosing dictions, making sentences, arranging structure, selecting one’s resources and conceptions and also improving one’s language competence. Therefore, prose translation should be defined as a special topic to be studied due to its specific characteristics. That is what has brought the thesis of this paper to be explored deeply and reasonably from different perspectives concerning its translation devices.
Prose owns a quite large readership, nevertheless, prose especially contemporary prose does not have an interpretive version. The reason is very simple: the translators are not native speakers of the target language, and their translated works are sometimes difficult for reader to feel no sense of distance. Prose devotes particular care to lingering charm, which is similar to poetry, and also devotes extraordinary care to narrative, which has something in common with fiction. Translating prose is the best way to test an interpreter’s translating capability and talent. Moreover, it is also one kind of literary translation and can be the basic training for other translation styles. 英汉散文翻译的文体对等研究(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_28304.html
