English songs in early childhood and primary school English teaching have made remarkable achievements, but the application in middle school English teaching is still relatively small.
While some domestic English educators have recognized the importance of English songs in junior middle school and college English teaching, and carried out a number of small-scale experimental course, even though these experiments have achieved some results, yet not open to the whole English teaching. Therefore, this paper, based on previous research on the characteristics of junior middle school students, using a combination of theory and practice, explores the role of English songs in “five steps in English class” in junior middle school.
Ⅱ. Brief Introduction to English Songs and “the Five Steps in English Class”
2.1 The Function of English Songs in English Class in Junior Middle School
2.1.1 The Characteristics of Junior Middle School Students
Junior middle school students have a strong curiosity and spirit of exploration. They have great interests, active thinking and sensitive, rare conservative compared with adults. They like to make a rich, strange fantasy and like ingenuity. However, there are still many disadvantages in junior middle school students’ learning process. Students’ learning skills are mainly in speaking and writing and other aspects, including memory, attention and grasp review process. The barriers of students learning skills exist mainly in the following aspects: the relatively poor attention in classroom; the lack of language skills; poorly reading skills; poorly written language skills and so on.
2.1.2 Advantage of English Songs in Junior Middle School’s English Class
Music not only creates a pleasant atmosphere, but also improves the learner’s interest and enhances the learner’s self-confidence. Learning to sing English songs can help learners correct pronunciation, acquire foreign cultures and improve students’ memory. Zhou Yunxia said, “English songs have the theoretical basis for its use in English teaching.”
English songs in Communicative Language Teaching method are a very important teaching tool for teachers, which provide rich and colorful language material.
