Abstract The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a classical novel in American literature in the 19th century. With the first Chinese translation published in the 1950s in China, scholars and readers in this country have shown an ever-increasing interest in Hawthorne’ works. Its immortal enchantment lies not only in its condemnation of the negative impact of Puritan society on people’s spirit, but more importantly, in the advocacy of kindness in humanity, the feminist thinking and the thinking of the democratic regimes which ask for equality and fairness. A tragedy is usually more touching than a comedy. That’s why The Scarlet Letter has a profound significance in the history of literature. The purpose of this paper is to find the causes of tragic color in The Scarlet Letter and the realistic significance of the tragic color.
The paper falls into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at exploring the causes of tragedy in The Scarlet Letter. The third part analyzes the realistic significance of the tragic color in The Scarlet Letter. The fourth part functions as a conclusion.
Key Words: The Scarlet Letter, tragic color, reasons, realistic significance
