Abstract:Robert Frost stands out in the twentieth century American literature. He makes great efforts in expressing his insights into society and human life through natural scenery description in his poems, which combines plain and simple language by large use of rhetorical devices such as metaphor, symbolism, irony and pun. He values using alliteration, serial rhyme, same rhyme and non-rhyme in poems, which combines thematic effect and artistic quality, to reach the unity of content and form. The natural guilelessness with rich implication of his poetry not only achieves enduring reputation around the world, but also provides a new train of thought to the foreign and domestic research. Based on Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, “The Road Not Taken”, “Mending Wall”, “Mowing” and “After Apple-Picking”, this paper analyzes the art of poetry from two perspectives of rhetorical devices and rhymes. It is the harmonious integration that enables his poems full of profound meanings, which reflects his love for nature and life.34947

An Analysis of the Art of Robert Frost’s Poetry
1. Introduction
Robert Frost (1874-1963) is usually labeled as “the most outstanding American poet in the twentieth century” and “the leader of a new age of American poetry” (Untermeyer 1971: 10). Although industrial civilization is prevailing in the twentieth century in America, Frost persists in singing for nature and rural scenery. He captures the inspiration of poetry from daily work and ordinary life in the countryside, namely, the joys and sorrows of the common people, with a unique perspective to explore the wisdom of life philosophy and to show his sincere love for nature. The simple way he composes his poetry gains a large readership at home and abroad, but the unique writing pattern, rhetorical devices, as well as the distance between his poetic appearance and essence arouse readers’ thinking. Many people misunderstand that his poems are merely simple and natural, while in fact, what conceals in the hidden text, through the combination of rhetorical devices and rhymes, is that his unique views on life and his care and love for nature. The honors Frost embraces throughout his career are incomparable to those of any other American poets of his times (Brooks 1973: 65). He won the Pulitzer Prize four times and was the only poet in American literary history who was invited by the President to read his poems at the inauguration. Many of his poems are popular with people home and worldwide. His influence is great not only in his own country, but also goes beyond the U.S.
