He has devoted himself to writing and published fine poetry for decades. His poetry is principally associated with daily life and natural landscape in his hometown -- upcountry New England. Also, he presents himself in his works. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, “The Road Not Taken”, “Mending Wall”, “Mowing” and “After Apple-Picking” are the most famous and representative five poems. All of them follow Frost’s belief that poems should begin in delight and end in wisdom.
To better understand Frost and his love for nature, this paper will analyze the art of his poetry from two perspectives, one is of the rhetorical devices such as metaphor, symbolism, irony and pun, and the other is of rhymes including alliteration, serial rhyme, same rhyme and non-rhyme in poems.
2. Literature review
Scholars have carried out lots of detailed studies on Frost’s poems home and abroad, which include researches on poem’s translation, artistic features, comparative literature, thematic meaning and so on. Among which, the studies of artistic features in Frost’s poems are the most intensive part. It can be concluded that the present research findings of artistic features in Frost’s poems are mainly from two perspectives: the rhetorical devices and the characteristics of rhymes. There are abundant studies on the employment of rhetorical devices in Frost’s poems home and abroad, domestic researches are represented by Cheng Aimin, Hu Kaijie and Su Hui. All of them carefully discovered the rhetorical devices based on the analysis of Frost’s famous poems, but they have different focus. Some of them only emphasize on the importance of the employment of metaphor in poems, some of them argue that the associated usages of metaphor and symbolism create the profound meaning, while others specialize on the employment of irony. Therefore, this paper will analyze rhetorical devices in Frost’s poems from a comparatively comprehensive perspective, which touches on the employment of metaphor, symbolism, irony and pun. 浅析罗伯特•弗罗斯特的诗歌艺术(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_32680.html
