Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
With the development of economic globalization, the communication and exchange between various cultures becomes increasingly frequent. Nowadays, a great large number of foreign films and television programs have entered into China market. As a special form of films and television programs, documentary warmly welcomed due to it presents the real frames to the audience, whose aims are recording and reflecting of the real world, not only natural but human realities, with the purpose of telling the truth through its production and broadcasting. English documentary is a significant channel for the Chinese people to gain knowledge of the physical geography, local conditions, customs, and historic culture of other countries. Wild China is a warmly welcomed and widely discussed documentary in both domestic and western countries, because it is the first documentary collaborated and coo-produced by China Central Television (CCTV) and BBC Natural History Unit in 2008. Due to the language barrier, most of Chinese people can understand the scenario of Wild China through the subtitle. So the subtitle translation of English documentary plays a very important role in the cultural communication.
However, there are many differences between the culture of Chinese and English. The background information and culture in the English documentary may become barrier of the cognitive comprehension to the Chinese readers. English documentary deliver its implication to the target language audiences under the condition that take a full consideration of the historical and cultural background of the target language. It is well-known that the subtitle translation of English documentary is transformation between the two kinds of language and in the process of transmitting culture，it is playing vital role in intercultural communication, and the subtitle translation of English documentary acts as a bridge for the intercultural communication.
1.2 Research Objective and Significance
This paper intends to explore strategies of subtitle translation from the perspective of skopos theory, based on the research results of the predecessors. Specifically, it studies the translation strategies used in the documentary subtitle of Wild China, which co-produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and China Central Television (CCTV), drawing on numerous examples of subtitles, the translation strategies are analyzed and pided into different groups. By this, it is expected to achieve a better understanding of subtitle translation, to provide subtitle translators references for their practical translation activities, and to attract as much attention as possible toward subtitles translation of documentary works in our country.
The significance of this study lies in the following aspects. First, the present study enables us to know about the techniques used in the field of translation with a view of improving the quality of translation, thus the target language audiences can understand the meaning of the documentary much better. Therefore，the study of the subtitle translation of English documentary can promote cultural communication among different countries. Second, the study of translation principles and strategies in this paper can provide a reference to the subtitle translation of English documentary in our country. In this way, to make up with the deficiency of the system of subtitle translation. The subtitle translation of English documentary will afford some theory absorption and technical assistance for the subtitle translation of Chinese documentary.
