Title Conceptual Metaphors in English Idioms
Abstract Focused on the concept of metaphor by Lakoff and based on the differences between traditional and cognitive metaphor, this paper probes the classification, connotation and pragmatic meaning of conceptual metaphor in English idioms. By recognizing the orientational metaphor, ontological metaphor and structural metaphor, it studies the variety of connotation, characteristics and performance to better understand and grasp the essence of idioms. This paper is expected to improve learners' ability of cognitiveness, language thinking and communication, which will eventually help us find metaphor in idioms, stimulate the interest to learn phrase language and to use idioms with creativity.

1 Introduction
1.1 The Purpose of the Thesis
As early as 2000 years ago, metaphor as linguistic phenomena was well noticed by scholars. Traditionally, metaphor is viewed as a matter of language, a set of extraordinary or figurative expressions whose meaning is confined to some set of literal propositions. In the past few decades, however, the situation has undergone a radical change. The interest in metaphor has grown rapidly in a broad range of disciplines. And this change is observed as metaphormania. Metaphor has already moved from a subsidiary subject to a central problem. In the 1980s, metaphor became an important topic in cognitive science.
In 1980, Lakoff and Johnson(1980) published the book Metaphor We Live By. It was a turning point in metaphor study, because since then, metaphor study has a new perspective, that is cognitive perspective. The theory claims that metaphor is not only a rhetoric method, but more concerns with human cognitive mechanism. The scholars regard metaphor as conceptual mapping across the cognitive domains. Metaphor is very universal in human cognition and exists in all linguistic types.
There exist a large number of metaphors in English idioms, which reflect the Anglo-American tradition of folk values, world value, the folk custom, religion, national culture, psychology and so on, so the study of the metaphorical phrase has important practical value. Except a few literal meaning and practical meaning completely consistent with idioms, most of the idiom cannot be directly understood from literal sense, so we need to use the mode of cognitive metaphor to understand the true meaning. 基于Lakoff概念隐喻的英语习语研究:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_5175.html
